Heo's silk fabrics, the world of silk and silkworm cocoon fabrics

Silk is a special product representing Sangju, and Heo's silk fabric represents Sangju's silk. It is run by Mr. and Mrs. Heo Ho, who inherit the family business of silk weaving for the fifth generation. You can see the essence of silk culture that has been passed down from generation to generation. It operates a silk weaving program where you can experience the process up close.

Silk weaving passed down as a family business for the 5th generation

Sangju is called the home of three white people. Rice, dried persimmons, and silkworm cocoons are the main characters. Among these, silk is a fabric made from the silkworm cocoon of the mulberry tree. Hamchang silk produced in Hamchang, where Heossi silk fabrics are located, is famous throughout the country along with Hansan ramie and Andongpo. Even now, when the five-day market is open, Myeongjujeon is the only one in Korea.

Heo's silk fabrics are the center of Hamchang silk fabrics. As it is the 5th generation of silk weaving, he is very proud. Min Sook-hee, the wife of CEO Heo Ho, has been doing the same for the fourth generation. The two got married in 1984 while CEO Heo Ho went back and forth to Min Sook-hee's house to fix silk machines and opened a workshop with 12 looms. At the time, there were only one or two looms in the family, so it was a pretty big business. By weaving silk in large quantities, the use of silk, which was mainly used for shrouds, was expanded to everyday life.

It didn't just stop at silk production. When the silk industry was in decline due to synthetic fibers, he collected tools such as a loom, drum, silk body, and a frame to make a bag while visiting houses that used to weave silk. The weaving room of Heo's Silk Fabric and the tools on display at the Silk Museum are traces of it. As it is difficult to continue the life of silk, it runs a silk experience program where you can feel it with your fingertips rather than just watching. Free traditional silk weaving experience for teenagers and their families. In May and June, you can experience picking and tasting mulberries, the fruit of the mulberry tree. Experience reservations can be made over the phone.
